A welcome move for students who wish to pursue core Mathematics in senior secondary classes.
CBSE
Permits Students with Mathematics Basic (241) in Class X to Pursue Mathematics
(041) in Class XI from 2025-26
In a
significant decision benefiting Class X students, the Central Board of
Secondary Education (CBSE) has announced that students who opted for
Mathematics Basic (code 241) in Class X will be permitted to choose Mathematics
(code 041) in Class XI from the academic session 2025-26 onward.
This move
continues the relaxation granted in previous academic sessions, especially
during the pandemic, wherein students with Mathematics Basic were temporarily
allowed to pursue core Mathematics in senior secondary classes. Earlier,
according to CBSE Circular No. Acad-03/2019 dated January 10, 2019, only those
who studied Mathematics Standard (041) in Class X were eligible to opt for
Mathematics (041) in Class XI. Students who chose Mathematics Basic (241) were
restricted to opting only for Applied Mathematics at the senior secondary
level.
Key
Highlights of the Latest CBSE Decision:
CBSE has
emphasized that this policy will remain in effect until a new curriculum is
introduced as per the recommendations of the National Curriculum Framework for
School Education (NCF-SE). All other conditions outlined in the 2019 circular
remain applicable.
Implications
for Students and Parents:
This
decision brings new hope to students who may have previously chosen Mathematics
Basic but now wish to pursue Mathematics as a core subject in their senior
years. It allows them to realign their academic path based on future goals,
including careers in engineering, sciences, and commerce streams that require
Mathematics (041).
CBSE has extended the relaxation allowing students who studied Mathematics Basic (241) in Class X to opt for Mathematics (041) in Class XI from the academic session 2025-26 onward. This change offers flexibility for students with aptitude and interest in core mathematics at the senior secondary level. Heads of Institutions must ensure students are capable of handling the subject. The decision will remain valid until a new curriculum is implemented under NCF-SE.
